I’m Amanda Younger. This website encompasses my capstone work for my Professional Masters in Education program at Queen’s University. I’m an elementary teacher in Langley, British Columbia teaching and learning on the traditional unceded territories of the he Kwantlen, Katzie, Musqueam and Semiahmoo first peoples. I began teaching in 2015 and have spend most of my career teaching grade 4. I completed my Post Graduate Diploma in Mathematics Education at Queens in 2022, BEd at UBC in 2015 and a geography degree at KPU in 2014. I am currently working towards my Professional Masters in Education as a Classroom Specialist through Queen’s University with a continued focus on math education.

Math is my favourite subject to teach, to work with students to demystify it, to turn something that is often perceived as scary into something positive. Presented properly math is playful, intriguing, joyful and fun. My goal is to create an environment that allows students to explore the beauty of mathematics through number sense. Number sense is the foundation of mathematical understanding. By creating opportunities for students to explore the basis of all other mathematics numbers, quantity and their relationships we allow them to become agile mathematicians. Number sense implies flexibility with number and the ability to work with numbers in multiple ways, to see each number and understand it’s composition and how it relates to other numbers.

Outside of the classroom I enjoy spending time with my husband and our son. My little guy is one of the reasons I do the work that I do with Number Agility, to create assessments and activities that allow him to experience math in a positive, creative and playful way.  I also enjoy hiking, long nature walks, cooking and making sugar cookies.
