This game is based on one of the Tiny Polka Dot activities from Math For Love. While tiny polka dot uses dot patterns on dice and cards Hungry, Hungry Numbers expands the game to multiple representations of numbers. Game decks are available for print and play activities for numbers 0-10, 0-20, fractions and decimals. The rules are simple and the game is fast paced, the goal is to be the first person to get rid of all of your cards by correctly matching them to the number in standard form. This game works for groups of 2-4 players.
How to play:
- Separate out the numbers in standard form cards
- Divide the remaining cards evenly between players
- Lay out the numbers in standard form cards in order from least to greatest
- Players take turns to correctly match the cards in their hand to the numbers on the table
- If a card is placed incorrectly players take it back and must wait until their next turn to try again.
- The winner is the first player to use all of their cards.
Adaptations and extensions:
- To simplify the game vary the number of cards or limit the representations used
- Younger students in the early years may benefit from working with the only numbers 0-5
- Have students create their own set of number representation cards to include in the game
- Mix the fraction and decimals cards
